Tree and Shrub Pruning

Tree and Shrub Pruning

I was taught to prune by an old carpenter who also happened to be a serious gardener. His rule was simple: "Every cut should have a reason." That's the mindset we bring to Tree and Shrub Pruning.

Good pruning is quiet work, but it changes everything. We start by walking the property and looking at each plant as an individual-age, health, shape, and how it fits into the bigger picture. Are branches blocking a view, scraping the house, or shading out lawn and perennials? Is that shrub supposed to be a loose, natural form or a more formal hedge?

We focus first on plant health: removing dead, crossing, and diseased wood so air and light can move through the canopy. That helps prevent problems before they start and encourages stronger new growth. Then we refine the shape, respecting the natural habit of the tree or shrub so it doesn't look hacked or boxy a month later.

Timing matters. We schedule pruning around bloom times and species needs-what you do to a hydrangea isn't what you do to a fruit tree or a privet hedge. With coastal wind and salt in the mix, we also keep an eye on structural strength, thinning and reducing where necessary so branches are less likely to break in a nor'easter.

For many of our clients, especially those off‑island, the biggest change is how tidy and open the property feels after a proper prune: clearer views, safer paths, better light on patios and lawns, and plants that look cared for instead of overgrown. Done right, pruning extends the life of your trees and shrubs and keeps the whole landscape looking sharp without ever feeling over‑managed.
